Central Food Market of Cádiz
Spain's oldest covered market, built in 1838 in Plaza de la Libertad. Its 40 stalls are renowned for fresh Atlantic seafood, including seasonal almadraba tuna.
The Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz is Spain's oldest covered market, trading from its neoclassical home on Plaza de la Libertad in Cádiz's historic old town since 1838. The market opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 4:30pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, and Sunday from noon to 5pm. With 40 stalls spread across the colonnaded building, it remains the heart of daily food shopping in the city and is the second most-visited building in Cádiz.
History and architecture
The market was designed by local architect Torcuato Benjumeda as a neoclassical quadrilateral plaza enclosed by a Doric portico, built on the site of the former Descalzos convent. Its 19th-century colonnaded exterior has been carefully preserved, while the central core was updated in the 21st century, now dominated by gleaming fish counters. The contrast between the historic shell and the modern interior is striking.
What to buy
Fresh Atlantic seafood is the real draw here. Cádiz sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded by the ocean, and the fish counters reflect that geography with some of the finest catches in Andalusia. Look for almadraba bluefin tuna, a seasonal Cádiz specialty caught using the ancient net-trap method in the Strait of Gibraltar. Alongside the fish, you'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, cheese and cured meats from the Sierra de Cádiz, and bread from local bakeries. There's also a food court area (Rincón Gastronómico) where you can sit down for fried fish and traditional tapas without leaving the market building.
