Ciudad Jardín Market
A neighbourhood municipal market in northern Málaga with 59 stalls, built in the 1950s. Ideal for fresh produce, fish, meat, and everyday groceries.
Ciudad Jardín Market (Mercado de Ciudad Jardín) is a covered indoor market at Av. Santiago Ramón y Cajal 148 in the Ciudad Jardín district of Málaga. One of the municipal markets in Málaga, it has 59 stalls selling fresh produce, meat, fish, cheese, bread, and local groceries. The market opens Monday to Saturday mornings and serves the everyday shopping needs of the surrounding neighbourhood rather than attracting tourists.
History and architecture
The market was designed by architect Luis Gutiérrez Mérida and built between 1950 and 1953. It is a fine example of autarkic architecture, with a whitewashed exterior and a central facade featuring three semicircular arches that let plenty of natural light into the interior. The building has been renovated three times, most recently in 2008.
What to buy
The 59 stalls cover a solid range of everyday groceries. You'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, bread, local honey, olive oil, nuts, and spices. There's a food court inside, so it's worth stopping for a coffee or a bite after browsing. The market is wheelchair accessible with an elevator available.
