Gijón South Market
Gijón's only surviving traditional market, built in 1899. Shop fresh Cantabrian seafood, Asturian cheese and produce across 35 indoor stalls.
Mercado del Sur is the only surviving traditional market in Gijón, housed in a distinctive pentagonal iron building on Plaza Seis de Agosto in the city centre. With 35 stalls open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 12pm, it's the main stop for fresh local produce, Cantabrian fish and Asturian specialties in the city.
History and architecture
Built between 1898 and 1899 to designs by architects Mariano Medarde and Buenaventura Junquera, the pentagonal iron structure spans 2,700 square metres and is considered a strong example of 19th-century iron architecture in Asturias. The building underwent a full renovation in the late 1990s and reopened in 2001, retaining its original character while bringing the facilities up to date.
What to buy
The main draw at Mercado del Sur is fresh fish. Stalls specialise in catch from the Cantabrian Sea, including day-boat fish and shellfish that you won't find in supermarkets. Alongside the seafood, you'll find handmade cheeses from small Asturian producers, homemade chorizos and sausages, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and fresh bread. Prepared food stalls round out the offer if you want a quick bite alongside your shopping. Payment is accepted by card, contactless and mobile as well as cash.
