Aldeanas Market
One of the oldest producer markets in the Basque Country, Aldeanas Market has traded at Plaza del Solar in Portugalete since 1459, with 25 stalls of local farmers selling direct.
Aldeanas Market is one of the oldest producer markets in the Basque Country, held at Plaza del Solar in Portugalete every Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 1pm. The name "aldeanas" means "village women" in Spanish, honouring the market's centuries-old tradition of rural female farmers selling their own produce directly in town. Today 25 stalls fill the indoor market with km-0 fruit, vegetables, fish, cheese and bread, all sold by the producers themselves.
History
The market first appeared in Portugalete's municipal ordinances in 1459 and has occupied its current spot at Plaza del Solar since 1718. For most of that history, the stalls were run almost exclusively by women farmers from the surrounding countryside. The traditional name Mercado de Aldeanas was formally restored in 2021, when updated regulations also expanded the permitted product range. In 2023, new heritage signage was installed at the plaza in Basque, Spanish, French and English, telling the market's story for visitors and locals alike.
What to buy
Every stall at Aldeanas must sell its own production, so there are no resellers. You'll find seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and seafood from the Bay of Biscay, Basque cheeses, cured meats, freshly baked bread, honey, and ornamental plants. Arrive before 11am for the widest choice, as popular lines go fast on both market days.
