Ruzafa Market
An indoor municipal market at the heart of Valencia's Ruzafa neighbourhood, with 35 stalls selling fresh produce, fish, meat, cheese and bread. Open Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 3pm.
Ruzafa Market (Mercado de Ruzafa) is a covered municipal market on Plaza del Baró de Cortés in Valencia's Ruzafa district. It opens Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 3pm and has 35 stalls selling fresh vegetables and fruit, meat, fish, cheese, dairy, and bread. Designed by architect Julio Bellot Senet and built in the 1950s, the market remains one of the neighbourhood's most recognisable landmarks and keeps a more local feel than the city's bigger covered markets.
History and architecture
The market was commissioned in 1954, when the municipality decided Ruzafa needed its own fresh produce hall to serve the growing neighbourhood. The building is best known for its colourful striped facade. The blue side indicates where the fish stalls are located, a practical detail that locals still use to navigate inside.
What to buy
The 35 stalls cover the essentials well: fresh vegetables and fruit, cuts of meat and poultry, fish and seafood, cheese and dairy, and freshly baked bread. The fish section, on the blue-facade side of the building, is particularly worth a stop. Arrive early for the best selection as the busiest period is between 7:30 and 9am. Cash, contactless card, and mobile payments are all accepted.
