Street Markets in Sanlucar de Barrameda

The biggest of the three is the Sanlúcar de Barrameda Street Market, with 75 stalls, which is the one worth the trip if you only have time for a single visit. Across the town's street markets you'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and dried fruits, and prepared foods on the food side, and clothing and textiles, footwear and leather, jewellery, handicrafts and second-hand books and magazines on the rest. That mix is typical of an Andalusian mercadillo: the produce goes first, the clothing rails stay busy until the traders start packing up.

Wednesday gives you the most to see, with two markets trading against one on Sunday. Come before 1pm if you want the fruit and vegetable stalls at their best, since the last hour is mostly packing up. Bring cash, as card acceptance at smaller stalls can be limited, and expect the streets around each pitch to be closed to traffic while the market is up. Stay in the Barrio Alto if you want the old town on your doorstep, since the street market pitches and the shopping streets are a short walk from there and you can leave the car parked. The Barrio Bajo sits by the river and the beach, with more bars and restaurants for after the market, and it is still walkable. With an 11am start you do not need to be up early, and a car is useful only if you are combining a market morning with the rest of Cádiz province.
