Felip II Market
A neighbourhood indoor market in Sant Andreu, Barcelona, Felip II has served the La Sagrera community since 1966 with 25 stalls of fresh produce, meat, fish, and dairy.
Felip II Market (Mercado de Felip II) is a covered municipal market in the Sant Andreu district of Barcelona, at the heart of the La Sagrera neighbourhood. It has been serving the local community since 1966, with 25 stalls selling fresh produce, meat, fish, cheese, and bakery goods. The market opens Monday to Thursday from 7am to 2pm, Saturday from 7am to 2:30pm, and has extended Friday hours from 7am to 8pm. It accepts cash, contactless, and mobile payments and is wheelchair accessible throughout.
History and architecture
The market was designed by architects Josep Ribas González, J. Anglada, and D. Gelabert and built in just six months to serve the working-class neighbourhoods that grew rapidly during Barcelona's post-war migration boom. Its most distinctive feature is its revolving hyperboloid skylights: circular ceramic and methacrylate cupolas that flood the interior with natural light and ventilate the hall naturally. These were described at the time as carrying a Gaudian reference, and the building was included in Barcelona's 2026 World Capital of Architecture programme. A renovation completed in late 2023 refreshed the floor, upgraded air conditioning, and consolidated the active stalls.
What to buy
The 25 stalls cover a solid range of daily food: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, cheese and dairy, and bread and pastries. The market also has a bar inside, so you can grab a coffee or a quick bite while you shop. For the best selection across all stalls, arrive before 11am. The official market page on the Barcelona Municipal Markets website has current service information.
