Galvany Market
A covered municipal market in Barcelona's Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 2:30pm. Its 35 stalls sell fresh produce, fish, meat, and prepared foods.
Galvany Market (Mercat de Galvany) is an indoor municipal market at Carrer de Santaló 65 in Barcelona's Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. With 35 stalls, it opens Monday to Saturday from 7am to 2:30pm and is closed on Sundays. It's a genuine neighbourhood market serving local residents rather than the tourist circuit.
History and architecture
Construction of Galvany Market began in 1868 on land donated by Josep Castelló i Galvany, the Earl of Galvany, following the annexation of the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood to the city. The market opened in 1927, and its design blends Modernisme with iron construction typical of the period. The floor plan follows a Greek cross shape, with exposed brick facades at each end and a metal framework supporting a large central dome. Eight columns and broad arches carry the dome, and a Modernista lamp fitted with a clock hangs at the centre of the hall.
What to buy
You'll find the staples of a well-stocked food market here: fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, bread, and prepared foods. The range is solid for a market of this size. Head to the fish stalls first thing in the morning for the best selection, or check the prepared food section if you want something ready to eat. The market accepts cash, contactless, and mobile payments.
