Llibertat Market
An indoor Modernist market in Barcelona's Gràcia district with 30 stalls selling fresh seafood, meat, and produce. Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 12:30pm.
Mercat de la Llibertat is an indoor municipal market in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, housed in a Modernist building dating from 1888. The ornate wrought-iron façade was designed by Francesc Berenguer, a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí, and the market is now a designated local Cultural Heritage Site. Its 30 stalls open Monday to Friday from 8am to 12:30pm, serving the neighbourhood as a working local market rather than a tourist attraction.
History and architecture
Mercat de la Llibertat was inaugurated in 1888, when Gràcia was still an independent village outside Barcelona. The covered structure and Modernista ironwork were added in 1893 by Francesc Berenguer, whose details include wrought-iron swans and Gràcia's coat of arms worked into the façade. The market was fully renovated in 2009, a project that doubled annual visitors from around 936,000 to 1.8 million while preserving the original iron and timber structure across its 1,728 m² floor area.
What to buy
The 30 stalls cover the full range of daily essentials: fresh seafood and live shellfish, meat and poultry, fruit and vegetables, cheese and dairy, and artisanal bread. For a midday stop, Hermoso Bar de Peix serves fresh fish tapas inside the market, and La Pubilla is a long-standing bar popular with market workers and locals. Both cash and mobile payments are accepted.
