Ninot Market
Mercat del Ninot has served Barcelona's Eixample neighbourhood since 1893. Its 45 stalls cover fresh fish, meat, vegetables, and prepared foods, open Monday to Saturday.
Mercat del Ninot is a historic indoor municipal market in Barcelona's Eixample district, at Carrer de Mallorca 133. One of the city's oldest continuously operating markets, it has been trading since 1893 and is a genuine local shopping destination rather than a tourist draw. The market's 45 stalls open Monday to Saturday from 8am, selling fresh fish, meat, produce, cheese, bread, and prepared foods.
History and architecture
The market was founded in 1893, originally called Mercat del Porvenir. Its current name comes from a nearby 19th-century tavern that displayed a ship figurehead at its entrance — "ninot" means puppet or figurehead in Catalan, and the original piece is now in the Maritime Museum of Barcelona. The building was redesigned in 1933 and underwent a major renovation between 2009 and 2015 by MAP Arquitectes, who preserved the original iron columns and glass roof while modernising the structure. The building is listed on the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
What to buy
You'll find the full range of daily fresh produce at Ninot: fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, fresh and cured meats, cheeses, bread, and prepared foods. The market has a food-court area with seating where several stalls double as small bars serving tapas and cooked plates at lunchtime. It's a solid spot to grab a meal alongside your shopping. All payment methods are accepted, including cash, cards, contactless, and mobile payments.
