Street Markets in Sanxenxo

The two markets are not selling the same thing. The Monday and Thursday mercadillo is the practical one, with fresh fruit and vegetables alongside clothing and textiles and a run of flowers and plants, on a side road off the Portonovo seafront. The summer market on Paseo de Portonovo and C/ Rafael Picó is an evening browse instead: handicrafts, jewellery and clothing, opening at 11am and staying out long after the beach empties. If you want produce, come on a Monday or a Thursday morning; the summer market will not feed you.

Come to the weekly market before noon. It closes at 2pm and the fruit and vegetable stalls thin out well before that. It trades on the flat and is listed as wheelchair accessible, and it takes cash and mobile payment, so carry notes rather than counting on a card reader at every stall. Parking in Portonovo is at its worst in July and August, when the summer market and the beach traffic overlap, and walking in along the coast road from Sanxenxo is often quicker than driving. Both markets are open air, so a wet Monday can thin the stall count.

Portonovo is the obvious base if you want to walk to both markets, and it is quieter outside market hours than the beachfront further east. Staying in the Sanxenxo town centre instead puts you a short hop along the coast, close enough to reach the 9am opening on foot without needing a car for the day.
