Sanxenxo has two street markets and both set up in Portonovo, not in the town centre. The weekly mercadillo runs Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 2pm with around 45 stalls, and from June to August a 75-stall summer market takes over the Paseo de Portonovo daily from 11am until just before midnight. Between the two, something is trading here every day of the week in high summer and twice a week for the rest of the year.

What the stalls sell

The two markets are not selling the same thing. The Monday and Thursday mercadillo is the practical one, with fresh fruit and vegetables alongside clothing and textiles and a run of flowers and plants, on a side road off the Portonovo seafront. The summer market on Paseo de Portonovo and C/ Rafael Picó is an evening browse instead: handicrafts, jewellery and clothing, opening at 11am and staying out long after the beach empties. If you want produce, come on a Monday or a Thursday morning; the summer market will not feed you.

Planning a visit

Come to the weekly market before noon. It closes at 2pm and the fruit and vegetable stalls thin out well before that. It trades on the flat and is listed as wheelchair accessible, and it takes cash and mobile payment, so carry notes rather than counting on a card reader at every stall. Parking in Portonovo is at its worst in July and August, when the summer market and the beach traffic overlap, and walking in along the coast road from Sanxenxo is often quicker than driving. Both markets are open air, so a wet Monday can thin the stall count.

Both of these also appear on the hub for all markets in Sanxenxo, and if you are staying a week and want a market on the days Portonovo is closed, the Pontevedra province page covers the towns along the same stretch of coast.

Where to stay in Sanxenxo

Portonovo is the obvious base if you want to walk to both markets, and it is quieter outside market hours than the beachfront further east. Staying in the Sanxenxo town centre instead puts you a short hop along the coast, close enough to reach the 9am opening on foot without needing a car for the day.

What day is the market in Sanxenxo?

Portonovo Street Market, the town's weekly mercadillo, runs on Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 2pm. In June, July and August the Portonovo Summer Market trades every day of the week from 11am as well, so through those three months there is a street market on somewhere in Sanxenxo on all seven days.

What time do street markets in Sanxenxo open?

Portonovo Street Market opens at 9am on Mondays and Thursdays and packs up at 2pm. The Portonovo Summer Market keeps different hours entirely, opening at 11am and running until just before midnight through June, July and August, which makes it an evening market rather than a morning one.

Are street markets in Sanxenxo free to enter?

Yes, entry to both Portonovo Street Market and Portonovo Summer Market is free, as both are open-air markets on public streets in Portonovo. The weekly Monday and Thursday market takes cash and mobile payment, so carry notes and coins rather than relying on finding a card reader at all 45 stalls.

Are there street markets in Sanxenxo on a Sunday?

Yes, the Portonovo Summer Market trades in Sanxenxo on Sundays, though only in June, July and August, when it runs daily from 11am until just before midnight. For the rest of the year there is no Sunday street market here, as the weekly Portonovo mercadillo sets up on Mondays and Thursdays only.
