Val Market
Valladolid's oldest and most emblematic food market, a 19th-century iron-and-glass hall near Plaza Mayor with 30 stalls and gastrobars open until midnight on weekends.
Mercado del Val is Valladolid's oldest and most celebrated food hall, a striking iron-and-glass building on Calle Sandoval a two-minute walk from Plaza Mayor. One of the markets in Valladolid, it opens Monday to Saturday from 8:30am, with food stalls running until mid-afternoon and a cluster of gastrobars keeping things lively well into the evening and past midnight on weekends. On Sundays the gastrobars open from 10am to 4pm.
History and architecture
Designed by architect Joaquín Ruiz Sierra and completed in 1882, the market was inspired by the great iron market halls of Paris. Its all-metal structure, fabricated in workshops in Bilbao and Valladolid, features two interior balconied levels and a chamfered rectangular plan stretching 112 metres. After a major renovation completed in 2016, it became Spain's first bioclimatic municipal market, adding energy-efficient systems while preserving the original 19th-century character.
What to buy
The market's 30 stalls cover the full range of everyday shopping: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, bread, pastries, cheese and charcutería. Seven gastrobars inside serve tapas, pintxos and raciones throughout the day, making it a solid lunch stop as well as a morning shopping run. Most bars open alongside the stalls from around 9am and the kitchens keep running long after the produce section closes. Home delivery is available from most vendors through the market's own online platform.
