Bailén Market
A large covered indoor market in Málaga's Bailén-Miraflores district, with 131 stalls and a recently completed renovation. Open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 3pm.
Bailén Market (Mercado Municipal de Bailén) is one of Malaga's largest covered markets, with 131 stalls spread across more than 3,000 square metres in the Bailén-Miraflores district. It's been feeding this corner of the city since 1964 and is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 3pm. The market is indoor and primarily serves local residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods of Bailén, La Trinidad, and Miraflores.
History and architecture
Bailén Market opened in 1964 as a neighbourhood commercial hub for the then-expanding northern districts of the city. A €3.1 million renovation completed in early 2026 modernised the building without ever closing it: new large windows added natural light throughout, acoustic panels made from 75% recycled materials improved the indoor environment, and two new multipurpose plaza spaces were created near the entrances on Plaza de Bailén and Calle Natalia. The result is one of the freshest-feeling municipal markets in the city, even if most of its 131 stalls remain firmly traditional.
What to buy
The fish section is worth a specific mention: it brings in fresh daily catches and is most active in the early morning. Meat stalls include Carnilovers, which specialises in Argentine-style cuts, and Carnicería Al Baraka, which stocks halal meat and serves Málaga's Moroccan community. Beyond the protein counters you'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and dairy, bread and pastries, local honey, olive oil, nuts, spices, and flowers. Prepared food stalls and a bar, El Añejo Taberna, mean you can grab a coffee or a plate of something hot without leaving the market. If you're comparing options nearby, Salamanca Market is another neighbourhood municipal market in the Trinidad district worth checking out.
