Markets in the Province of Malaga

Andalusia, Spain · 218 markets across 67 cities

218 markets across 67 cities Verified information

Malaga province has 218 markets spread across 67 towns, and the practical question when you arrive is not which market is best but which one is open on the day you have free. Market days are set town by town, so two places twenty minutes apart often trade on different mornings.

Saturday is the busiest day here, with 75 markets trading, followed by Sunday with 63 and Friday with 57. Monday and Tuesday are the quietest, with 44 markets each, so no day of the week leaves you without options. Most open at 09:00 and pack up at 14:00, which makes an early start worth it: by one o'clock the fish and produce stalls are already thinning out. Of the 218 markets, 204 have a confirmed trading day and 14 do not, so if a town's page does not name a day, that is because it has not been confirmed rather than because the market has closed.

The split is heavily towards street markets, 191 of them, against 27 municipal food markets. The municipal halls trade to regular hours through the week and are where you go for fish, meat and vegetables; the street markets set up on one fixed morning, cover clothes, household goods and produce, and clear away by mid-afternoon. Malaga city alone accounts for 40 markets, more than any other town in the province. Marbella has 10, Fuengirola 9 and Benalmadena 7, with Velez-Malaga, Mijas and Las Lagunas de Mijas on 6 each. Smaller inland towns such as Alfarnate run four. For the other provinces and how they compare, see the guide to markets across Andalusia.
