Markets in Jerez de la Frontera

Staying in the Centro Histórico puts you within easy walking distance of the city's main markets and most of the key sights. The Hotel Palacio Garvey is a smart central option with plenty of character, or if you prefer something more boutique, Hotel Casa Grande offers a quieter stay just a short stroll from the action.

Every market in Jerez is an open-air mercadillo rather than a covered hall, and what is on the tables changes with the neighbourhood. The Sunday rastro on Paseo de las Palmeras is the outlier at 80 stalls, the one place where antiques, jewellery and prepared foods sit alongside the clothing rails.

The other five run 25 to 30 stalls each and serve the barrio around them. Clothing and textiles turn up at all six, footwear and handicrafts at five, second-hand books at three. Two of them, Zona Centro on Calle Parada y Barreto and the Plaza de la Constitución market, also sell fresh fruit and vegetables, which is as close as the city gets to a local farmers market. Cash is the safe assumption everywhere.

Monday, Friday and Saturday are the busiest days, with three of the six markets trading; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday each have two.
