El Piojito Market

The market takes its name from the esplanade it occupies, and locals use the short form, El Piojito, for both. It is an open-air mercadillo rather than a covered hall, so the whole thing appears and packs away again inside five hours. Friday is the only day it runs, and on any other morning the esplanade is empty ground.

Clothing and textiles take up the largest share of the 120 stalls, with footwear and leather goods alongside them. The food end sells fresh fruit and vegetables plus spices and herbs, loose and by weight. Nothing here is indoors, so a hat in summer and a plan for rain in winter both help.

Staying in Casco Antiguo puts you within easy walking distance of the esplanade, and Centro is much the same, with smaller guesthouses and holiday apartments a few minutes from Avenida de la Música. The Hotel Fuerte Conil-Costa Luz is the comfortable option if you don't mind a short drive.
