Peix Market

Known in Spanish as the Mercado del Peix, this is Mahón's mercado de pescado, and the fish counters set the tone for everything else sold under the roof. The market is indoor, so a wet Saturday changes nothing about a visit, and it is wheelchair accessible throughout.

There is a seating area inside, which is the detail that matters most here: you can buy and eat in the same room rather than carrying a bag home. Parking is available, and the stalls take cards, contactless and mobile payments as well as cash.

Fish and seafood come first across the 8 stalls, and they are the reason most people walk in. Alongside them you'll find prepared food to eat on the spot, and wine and spirits. That combination of a fish counter, a plate, and a glass in one building is unusual among the municipal markets in Mahón, and it is worth knowing that Saturday is the only day you can do it here. The rest of the week the doors are shut.

Staying in the Old Town puts you within easy walking distance of the Peix Market and the harbour, with plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby to round out your visit. The Hotel Port Mahon is a well-positioned option with views over the port, and the Mirador des Port offers a comfortable, central base at a reasonable price.

If you prefer a quieter stay, look at the area around Es Castell, just a short drive from the city centre and easy to reach by local bus.

The market is at Pl. de España, 1, 07701 Mahón, in the centre of town. Parking is available at the market, which is useful given the Saturday-only opening puts everyone through the door on the same day. Access is step-free for wheelchair users.
