El Mercado

El Mercado is Durango's indoor municipal market, located in the heart of the old quarter on Uribarri street. It opens on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7:30am to 2pm, with 25 stalls covering the full range of daily shopping, and it's the centrepiece of markets in Durango for local residents.

What to buy at El Mercado

The 25 stalls stock seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and seafood from the Cantabrian coast, meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, and freshly baked bread. It covers everyday grocery needs in a compact, sheltered hall. Cash and mobile payments are both accepted.

How to get to El Mercado

El Mercado is at Uribarri, 2-4 in central Durango, a short walk from the train station. Euskotren runs regular services to Bilbao in around 30 minutes. Street parking and public car parks are available close by. For more municipal markets in Biscay, Bilbao has a much larger indoor market scene.

Durango is a compact town, so staying central puts you within easy walking distance of El Mercado and the old quarter. Durango town centre is your best bet, with a handful of comfortable hotels and easy access to everything on foot.

If you prefer something with a bit more character, Casco Histórico sits right in the heart of the old town and keeps you close to the market action. Either way, you won't need a car to get around.
