Órgiva Market

The market keeps the same hours every day it opens, 9am to 2pm from Monday through to Saturday, and closes on Sunday. There is no single market day to plan a trip around, which is unusual enough in the Alpujarras that it is worth knowing: a Tuesday morning here buys the same counters as a Saturday one.

The hall is entirely indoor and wheelchair accessible, so the counters stay usable in the summer heat and in the wet spring weather that comes off the Sierra Nevada. Stalls take cash, contactless and mobile payments, though it is still worth carrying coins for the smaller counters.

A food court inside means you can eat on the spot rather than only shop, which is the reason a fair number of people walk down from Plaza Alpujarra in the morning.

Organic produce is the distinctive part of the mix. Alongside it you'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and bakery goods, local honey, and coffee and tea.

The honey is worth a stop in a town this close to the high Alpujarras valleys, and the fruit and vegetable counters are at their fullest early, so a 9am to 11am visit gets the pick of what came in that morning. Órgiva's long-settled North African community shows up in the specialities sold around the town, and the market sits at the centre of that food shopping.

Órgiva is a small town, so staying central puts you within a few minutes' walk of the market on Calle Correo. The Town Centre is your best base, with a handful of guesthouses and rural hotels close to the action.

If you prefer something with more space, the surrounding Alpujarras countryside has rural retreats worth considering. Hotel Taray Botánico sits just outside town and is a well-regarded option with gardens and easy access back in for the morning counters.

The market sits on Calle Correo in the town centre, a short walk from Plaza Alpujarra. Regular Alsa buses connect Órgiva with Granada city, and the trip takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

Street parking is available in the surrounding roads, though spaces tighten during the 9am to 2pm trading hours. From here the rest of Granada province is within reach for anyone working through the region's markets.
