Ugíjar Market

The hall trades six mornings a week and closes at 2pm, which is how shopping works here: people come before lunch and the place empties by early afternoon. Everything is under a roof, so the weather makes no difference to a visit, and there are public toilets on site.

With 15 stalls, the hall is compact, and you can walk the whole of it in a few minutes. Payment is cash only, so draw out euros before you arrive rather than expecting a card machine at the counters. The stalls between them cover a full weekly shop: fresh fruit and fresh vegetables, meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, and bread and bakery goods. There is no fish counter listed among the stalls, so plan around that.

If you are self-catering in the Alpujarras, this is the practical stop, bread and cheese and a bag of fruit in one visit, all bought before 2pm. Come early for the widest choice at the bakery and produce stalls.

Ugíjar is a small town, so the easiest base is close to the centre, within walking distance of the market. Try Town Centre for easy access to the market square and the local bars and shops around it.

For more choice, the surrounding Alpujarra villages are worth considering too. Las Alpujarras has several rural guesthouses and small hotels that make a good base for exploring the area, with Ugíjar a short drive away.
