Antequera Food Market

The hall was designed in 1879 by the architect Fernando de la Torriente and delivered to the municipality of Antequera on 16 December 1885. It has been the town's covered food market since, and later modernisation work has kept it in daily use.

Hours are the same on all six trading days, 8am to 3pm, with no late opening and no half-day. The building is wheelchair accessible throughout, which matters in a hill town where much of the old centre is on a slope. Stalls take cash, credit and debit cards, contactless and mobile payments.

The 25 stalls cover six lines: fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, cheese and dairy, and bread and bakery goods. That is the shape of a working food hall rather than a general market, so you are buying ingredients here, not clothing or household goods. Everything is under one roof, which is worth knowing in an Antequera summer.

Staying in or near the historic centre puts you within easy walking distance of the market and Antequera's main sights. Try City Centre for the most convenient base, or look at Parador de Antequera if you want a bit of comfort and character in a classic Spanish setting.

For somewhere close to the restaurants without being in the middle of them, Plaza de San Sebastián is a few minutes from the market on foot.

The market is at Pl. San Francisco in Antequera's old town, a short walk from the Alcazaba and the town's main churches. Parking is available directly next to the market building. From Antequera railway station, the walk into the centre takes around 10 minutes.
