Bilbao Flower Market

This is a municipal market, so it sits under a roof rather than on the pavement, and the Sunday 9am to 2pm session is the whole trading week. There is no Saturday or weekday opening, so if you want flowers here you plan around Sunday morning.

Being indoors matters more than it sounds in Bilbao. Stock stays out of the weather and so do you, and the hall is level and wheelchair accessible throughout. Stalls take cash, contactless cards and mobile payment, so a phone is enough to shop with.

Flowers and plants, and nothing else. That means cut stems for the table, bunches to carry away, and potted plants for a balcony or a windowsill. What is on the benches shifts with the growing season, so a visit in April looks nothing like a visit in October.

Because the whole market sells one category, comparing is easy. You can walk the length of it, see what several stalls are asking for the same thing, and then go back to the one you liked. Compare that with a general food hall, where flowers get a single corner stand and one price. If you are buying pots rather than cut stems, think about how you will carry them: this is a market you reach on foot or by public transport.

Staying in the Casco Viejo puts you in the old town, a short walk from the flower market and plenty of pintxos bars to enjoy after a browse. The Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao is a solid choice if you want something central and comfortable, with the Guggenheim right on your doorstep.

For a quieter option, Abando is a well-connected neighbourhood close to the main train station and easy to reach from most market locations across the city.
