Portugalete Municipal Market
A compact covered market with 25 stalls in central Portugalete, open Monday to Saturday from 8am to noon. Fresh seafood, Basque cheeses, and daily produce.
Portugalete Municipal Market (Mercado de Abastos) is a covered indoor market on El Solar Plaza in the centre of Portugalete, Bizkaia. With 25 stalls, it's a compact but well-stocked local food market serving the town six days a week. It opens Monday to Saturday from 8am to noon.
History and architecture
The current building dates to 1938, designed by architect Santos Zunzunegui and inaugurated in February 1940. After closing in 2010, it was revived in 2015 and now combines traditional food shopping with community and cultural spaces. It's one of the more characterful municipal markets in Portugalete.
What to buy
The stalls cover everything for daily cooking: fresh fish and seafood from the Bay of Biscay, seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, Basque cheeses, and bread from local bakeries. Most stalls accept cash and card. Arrive before 11am for the best selection, particularly at the fish counter.
