Markets in Arona

Arona is a large municipality that stretches from the coast up into the hills, so it's worth thinking about which area suits you best. The resort of Los Cristianos is a practical base, with easy access to markets across the south of Tenerife, and you'll find plenty of accommodation options there at Los Cristianos. Playa de las Américas is another solid choice if you want to be close to the action, and Playa de las Américas has everything from budget stays to more comfortable hotels.

If you prefer something a bit quieter, the area around Costa del Silencio offers a more relaxed atmosphere while still keeping you within easy reach of the local markets.

The three street markets set up in Los Cristianos, in the Guaza neighbourhood and in Arona itself, and they split into two different shopping trips: fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and certified organic produce at one, clothing, footwear, handicrafts and books at the others. Stalls come down in the early afternoon, so treat all three as a morning out.

The larger of the two indoor halls is the San Lorenzo Valley Farmer's Market in Valle San Lorenzo, the biggest market in the municipality at 25 stalls, selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, local honey, nuts, dried fruits, spices and herbs. Trading under a roof means the weather never closes it.

The second hall is down in Los Cristianos and deals in fish and seafood alone, best bought early while the counters are still full. Opening hours are posted on the Arona municipal website.

Friday and Saturday are the busiest, with three of the five markets trading on each, followed by Tuesday and Sunday with two, and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with one apiece. One of the five has no confirmed day on record, so check before making a special trip for it. Other market towns in the province are listed on the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province page.

Arona's main farmers market is the San Lorenzo Valley Farmer's Market in the hillside village of Valle San Lorenzo, where 25 indoor stalls sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, local honey, nuts, dried fruits, spices and herbs. Dutch visitors searching for a boerenmarkt in Arona mean this one. A second, open-air farmers market runs elsewhere in the municipality.

Arona has a market trading on every day of the week. Friday and Saturday are the busiest, with three of the five open on each, Tuesday and Sunday have two, and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday one each. Each market runs weekly on its own fixed day rather than rotating.

Markets in Arona usually open at 9am and close at 2pm. The two indoor municipal halls hold those hours reliably; the three street markets start packing away once the morning trade thins, so arrive before midday if you want the fish counters and produce stalls at their fullest.

Arona's markets sell fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, bread and bakery, local honey, nuts and dried fruits, spices and herbs, and certified organic produce, alongside clothing and textiles, footwear and leather, handicrafts, and second-hand books. Food dominates the two municipal halls; clothing and crafts are the street market trade.
