San Lorenzo Valley Farmer's Market

All 25 stalls trade under one roof, so the market works the same in wind or rain as it does in sun, which is not true of the open-air markets on the coast below. Two trading days a week is the thing to plan around: Friday and Saturday, 08:00 to 14:00, and nothing from Sunday to Thursday. Spanish signage gives the full name as Mercado del Agricultor del Valle de San Lorenzo, and Dutch and German shoppers in the south of the island will recognise the format as a boerenmarkt or Bauernmarkt. Bring cash, because that is the only payment the stalls take.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are the core of the market, sold by the people growing them. Alongside them you'll find local honey, nuts and dried fruit, and spices and herbs, and several stalls carry organic produce. Because the stallholders are farmers rather than resellers, what is on the counters shifts with what is ready to pick, so the range in February is not the range in August.

Arona is a spread-out municipality, so staying in or around Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas puts you within easy reach of the valley while keeping you close to the coast and plenty of dining options. Both areas have a good mix of hotels, apartments, and transport links to get you around.
