Markets in the Province of Ciudad Real

Ciudad Real has 53 markets spread across 20 towns and cities, and 43 of them are street markets that set up for a morning and pack away by early afternoon. The other 10 are municipal markets in permanent halls. If you are working out when to go, the weekend end of the week is where the province concentrates: 29 markets run on a Saturday and 28 on a Friday, against 12 on a Tuesday, the quietest trading day.

Midweek is thinner but not empty. Monday and Tuesday have 12 markets each, Wednesday 15, Thursday 16. Sunday sits at 15, which is higher than most of the midweek days and worth knowing if you are passing through on a weekend break. Whichever day you pick, plan for the morning: 9am to 2pm is the most common pattern across the province, so a market you arrive at after lunch is likely to be a market that has already gone.

The towns with the most to see are Alcazar de San Juan with five markets, then Valdepeñas, the provincial capital Ciudad Real, Miguelturra and Puertollano with four each. Almagro, Daimiel, La Solana, Moral de Calatrava and Socuéllamos each have three, which makes them reasonable bases if you want more than one market within a short drive. One caveat before you build a route around any of this. Seven of the 53 markets have no confirmed trading day, so 46 have a day we can state with confidence. Check each market's own page for its days and hours rather than assuming a town follows the provincial pattern.
