Castelldefels Farmers Market

The Catalan name, Mercat de Pagès, translates roughly as farmers' or growers' market, and that is the whole point of it. Stalls line a stretch of Carrer Arcadi Balaguer, a street closed to traffic, so the whole thing is at pavement level with nothing under cover. Six hours is a generous window for a street market, though the first couple of hours after 8am are when the produce is at its best and the queues are shortest.

Because everything is outdoors, weather shapes the visit. There is no indoor hall to retreat into, no seating and no cafés on site, so plan on buying and walking on rather than settling in.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are the core of it, sold by the growers themselves, which means the stock shifts with the Catalan season rather than staying the same all year. Alongside them you'll find organic produce, useful if you want certified growers rather than general greengrocery.

What you will not find here is the range of a general weekly market. This is a shopping trip for the week's fruit and veg, and a short one, so bring a bag and small notes.
