Barcarrota Municipal Market

The hours are the same every day: 7:30am to 3pm, with no shorter Saturday and no Sunday closure. That is worth knowing in a town this size, where a weekend arrival often means finding everything shut. The hall is entirely indoors, so the weather makes no difference to a shopping trip, and it is recorded as wheelchair accessible throughout. Stalls take both cash and card.

The 25 stalls cover the whole of a week's food shopping: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, cheese and dairy, and bread and bakery goods. This is a working community market rather than a tourist stop, which is what makes it useful: the fish and bread counters are stocked for the town's own kitchens, and the doors open at 7:30am for people shopping before work.

Barcarrota is a small town, so your best bet is staying centrally near Town Centre, where you can walk to the municipal market and the main square without any hassle. Accommodation options are limited here, so many visitors also base themselves in nearby Badajoz and make the short drive over.
