Vegueta Market

The market hall opened in 1858, built to solve a serious food supply problem and to replace the open-air trading that had operated in the Vegueta area since at least the late 18th century. It was the first purpose-built market in the Canary Islands. The orange building on Calle Mendizábal sits in the heart of Las Palmas' oldest quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed district of colonial streets, the city's cathedral, and traditional Canarian architecture.

The 40 stalls cover everyday staples and island specialities alike. You'll find tropical fruits grown on Gran Canaria's southern farms, meats from Valleseco in the island's interior, and fresh fish and seafood straight from Atlantic waters. Local Canarian cheeses, freshly baked bread, olives from Temisas, and bundles of medicinal herbs round out the offer. Many stallholders are happy to let you taste before you buy, particularly with fruit and cheese. Arrive before 10am for the best selection.

The market is at Calle Mendizábal 1, in the centre of Las Palmas' Vegueta district. Several city bus routes serve the area, and the historic quarter is walkable from the city's main shopping streets.
