Vegueta Market

The market hall opened in 1858, replacing the open-air trading that had operated in the Vegueta area since at least the late 18th century, and it was the first purpose-built market in the Canary Islands. The orange building on Calle Mendizábal sits in the city's oldest quarter, among colonial streets and the cathedral.

The 40 stalls cover everyday staples and island specialities alike. You'll find tropical fruits grown on Gran Canaria's southern farms, meats from Valleseco in the island's interior, and fresh fish and seafood straight from Atlantic waters. Local Canarian cheeses, freshly baked bread, olives from Temisas, and bundles of medicinal herbs round out the offer. Arrive before 10am, when the fish and fruit counters are at their fullest.
