Mercado del Puerto is a covered food market on Calle Albareda in the port district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a short walk from Las Canteras beach. Food stalls open from early morning Monday to Saturday, and the food court runs into the evening from Tuesday through Saturday. On Sundays the gastronomic section opens from noon to 5pm. It is one of the municipal markets in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
History and architecture
The market building dates to 1891 and was constructed by engineers from Gustave Eiffel's company, the same firm behind the Eiffel Tower. Its cast iron and glass structure is now a protected Cultural Heritage Site. After a renovation in 1994, it became the first market in the Canary Islands to combine a traditional fresh food market with a gastronomy offer, a format that has since spread across Spain.
