La Recova is Santa Cruz de La Palma's indoor municipal market, with 15 stalls selling tropical fruits, fresh fish and Canarian cheese. Open Monday to Saturday, 7am to 2pm.

The Mercado Municipal de Santa Cruz de La Palma, known locally as La Recova, is the main indoor food market in the capital of La Palma island. It sits on Avenida el Puente in Santa Cruz de la Palma and is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 2pm.

About La Recova

The building occupies the site of a hospital founded in 1514, later converted into a covered marketplace. Its neoclassical interior features a central skylight that fills the hall with natural light through the morning. A renovation in the early 2000s modernised the facilities while keeping the traditional layout intact.

With 15 stalls, it's a compact market with a local atmosphere. It's fully indoors and wheelchair accessible, with both cash and mobile payment accepted.

What to buy at La Recova

The stalls carry fresh produce grown across La Palma and the wider Canary Islands. You'll find tropical fruits including bananas, papayas, mangos, and avocados alongside locally grown vegetables. The fish section stocks fresh catch from island boats, and the cheese counters carry Canarian varieties cut to order. Coffee and tea are also available.

La Recova is the main option among municipal markets in Santa Cruz de la Palma, and the best place in the city centre to pick up fresh local produce.

Where to stay in Santa Cruz de la Palma

Staying in the historic centre puts you within easy walking distance of the municipal market and the beautiful colonial waterfront. Try Centro Histórico for a good selection of guesthouses and small hotels right in the heart of things.

If you'd prefer somewhere with more facilities, Hotel Monopol and Hotel Chipi-Chipi are both well-placed options that keep you close to the market without any need for a car.

For a quieter base, the pedestrian streets around Calle O'Daly are a few minutes' walk from Avenida el Puente, close enough to reach the stalls before the 2pm close.

What time does La Recova open?

La Recova opens at 7am and closes at 2pm, Monday to Saturday, and does not open on Sunday. That same seven-hour window applies every trading day, so a morning visit is the only option. Stalls take cash and mobile payment, so carrying euros is still worth it.

What can you buy at La Recova market?

La Recova's 15 stalls sell tropical fruits, locally grown vegetables, fresh fish and seafood, Canarian cheese and other dairy, plus coffee and tea. The produce comes from farms across La Palma and the fish from island boats, and the cheese counters cut to order rather than selling pre-packed.

Is La Recova market wheelchair accessible?

Yes, Santa Cruz de La Palma Municipal Market is wheelchair accessible. The hall is entirely indoors at Av. el Puente, 16, so there is no open ground or temporary stall pitch to cross, and all 15 counters sit under one roof a short walk from the seafront promenade.
