Xaló Street Market

Known in Spanish as Mercadillo Xaló, the market runs weekly, Saturdays only, packing away at 2.30pm. Twenty-five stalls is small by Spanish standards, so this is half an hour of walking rather than a whole morning. The pitch is wheelchair accessible, and stalls take cash and credit cards, which is not the norm at a Spanish street market.

Four categories cover the 25 stalls: antiques, handicrafts, jewellery, and clothing and textiles. Antiques lead, and they are why the market turns up in searches for a flea market rather than a food market. No fruit, vegetable or fish stalls are confirmed here, so plan the visit around objects rather than a week's shopping.

Xaló is a small village, so the town centre is the easiest base if you want to walk to the market. Try Town Centre for that, or a rural guesthouse in the surrounding valley for a quieter stay. If availability is thin, Calpe and Altea are both short drives down to the coast and carry far more rooms.
